Home Cleansing & Blessing

Can a ghost or spirit follow me home? If so, what can I do about it?
And how can I protect my home from negative energies?

Lets start with the first question…
This is a very common question in the paranormal field. As paranormal investigators, we have read, heard stories, and been asked this question over and over. The answer to this question is YES, a ghost, or spirit can follow a person home. This does not mean that everyone will have a ghost as a stalker, or unwelcome guest. It is very possible for a ghost to follow someone after they have had some kind of contact, or been in a haunted environment. We say it is possible, not that it will happen, but it can. As a general rule, human spirits normally do not follow people from location to location.  Most seem to be drawn to or attached to a building or area.  They will remain there regardless of who is living there.   Some of the occupants will know there is a spirit present and others, who are less sensitive, will not.   The location could have been the spirits home, a favorite place or the scene of its death.

While we don’t believe that there are ghosts just hanging around waiting to catch a ride home with you. There is a theory that a ghost or spirit may feel they have a kinship with a person. A certain person may remind the ghost of a loved one, or spouse, or family member that they miss very much. Most earthbound spirits, we believe are here because they are lost, or have some kind of unfinished business here on Earth. There are other spirits here for other reasons (Demonic Spirits, evil spirits, etc.….),
Also, it is not always the case that a ghost followed a person home, but an item, or object. A ghost or spirit can attach itself to an item also. If in life a person loved an item so much, the person’s spirit may attach itself to it after death. So if you buy something from an estate sale, or yard sale, and strange things start happening in your home, it is possible you bought an item that a spirit loved so much, it doesn’t want to leave the item.

To sum this up, yes, it is possible for a ghost to follow you home. It is a very rare occurrence, but it does happen. Our advice to anyone working in the Paranormal Field is “Protect yourself, and your team.” To homeowners, contact a reputable paranormal group in your area for help. If this is not something you feel comfortable with, there are some other things that you can do.

So…What can I can I do about it? And how can I protect my home from negative energies?

Clearing Your Home of Negative Energy
Regular spiritual house clearings are important to remove any negative energies that may be hanging around. You’d be amazed at how that stuff likes to linger!
The most important thing is your intention that you are removing negative energy.

At times a home may fall prey to storing negative energy, unwanted spirits/ghosts and other paranormal occurrences. This usually happens if there have been negative events within the home, such as violence, death, sickness, depression, or imbalance of the land etc. It can also occur due to spirits being drawn to a member of the household, or a spirit haunting a place due to unresolved issues.

These events may be known to you, or they may have occurred prior to you living in the house in question. If you feel uncomfortable with the energy of your home, or you have had manifestations that are unwanted, it is advised that you have your home cleansed and blessed to prevent the negative energies from affecting you and your family. When a spiritual cleansing is performed in a home or a sacred space, indoors or outdoors, negative energies are removed.

Michigan Paranormal Alliance does offer Home cleansings and blessings at no cost to you. However these can be performed by clergy persons, or even yourself. The following are some examples of things you can do on your own.

House Blessing

Blessing a house is very simple. No long drawn out prayers or shouting is required. We suggest anointing your doors and windows with oil. (Olive oil, vegetable oil, any household oil is perfectly fine because it is simply representing the Holy Spirit). It is your intent that matters most.

Put a small dot of oil on top of every access way into your home, windows and doors and interior entryways into every room of your house, including basement and attic. (You only need to do this from the inside!) If you have a garage, do not forget to anoint this building as well.

Pray over each room, (The Lord’s Prayer may be used.) Ask for angels to be posted at all the doors and windows, disallowing anything evil from entering in. Speak out loud that you are taking authority in the name of Jesus.

Suppose there is a particular spot in your house that feels disturbing. You might stand in that spot and say something like; “I speak peace here in the name of Jesus. I invite you to come, Holy Spirit, and fill this place. Fear (or whatever), leave.”

House Cleansing

A cleansing can range from smudging with sage to clear energies all the way to kicking butt and taking names and booting an entity (or entities) from an area. There are many ways to perform a Cleansing… Including all sorts of things from smudging to simply wiping down the walls with a vinegar solution. We’ll focus on “Smudging” as this seems to be the most popular. Remember that it is your intent that matters more that what you use.

Sage (salvia divinitorium) is an herb that is considered to have energy clearing properties and seems to have a negative effect on nonhuman and negative entities. In other words, it acts kind of like an eraser on any residual energy (both positive and negative) and a roach spray against negative entities. Sage’s botanical name, salvia, means “to heal” or “to save.” Since ancient times, people from many different cultures have burned this herb to purify and cleanse their surroundings. Please note, that any incense may be used and will be just as effective.

How to Smudge

Purchase a sage smudge stick (or your favorite incense) from a natural-foods store, metaphysical shop or boutique that sells goods for the home. Focus on your goals for the smudging process before you begin. If your hope is to dispel negative energy or cleanse your home of stress or conflict, visualize the peaceful surroundings that you are trying to create. If you are trying to freshen and energize the rooms, imagine the stale air disappearing as the sage smoke scents the rooms.

Light the broad end of the stick with a lighter or matches. Blow on or fan the sage until it begins smoking freely.

Walk slowly through your home with the smudge stick, waving it gently in front of you to distribute the smoke. (Native-americans used a feather to waft the smoke) As you walk, be conscious of your thoughts and feelings.

Many people repeat prayers for cleansing or healing as they progress through their home; others focus on positive images such as smiling loved ones or white light. If there is a particular area of your home that needs extra attention, spend more time in that room. Be mindful and aware of your presence in the room, and the sage’s clarifying smell.

Extinguish the smudge stick after you have finished by stubbing the end gently in an ashtray or saucer until all embers are out. Wrap your smudge stick in foil, cloth or a plastic bag and store it in a dark, dry place until you are ready to use it again.
